Gazetteers Department is a separate Directorate of the Govt of Maharashtra under the administrative control of the Cultural Affairs Department of the Govt. of Maharashtra.This Department publishes District and State Gazetteers in Marathi and English Languages
What We Do?
Gazetteer literally means only a geographical index or geographical dictionary.It not only includes a comprehensive description of the physical and natural features of a region but also a broad narrative of the social,political,economic and cultural life of the people living in a district. The topics on physical features, material resources, history,customs and manners of the people, trade, agriculture, industries, communication, district administration, various social organisations and places of interest in a district are covered.
1. District Gazetteers (British period) reprint- the old Gazetteers published in the British regime contains valuable information which is referred by Research Scholars. In this series 26 Gazetteers are reprinted and published.
2. District Gazetteers (Revised Edition)- in this series, out of 26 districts at the time of formation of Maharashtra, one volume each for 25 districts and 3 volumes for Mumbai, accordingly total 28 volumes are published in English
3. District Gazetteers (Marathi)- taking into consideration the language of the State, this Department has undertaken the series of publishing the District Gazetteers in Marathi. Detail Information regarding history, geography, people, administration, planning, trade and commerce, social service, culture and places of interest of a particular district is published in nearabout 1000 to 1200 pages. In this series Parbhani, Wardha, Kolhapur, Raigad, Jalgaon, Satara, Nagpur (part 1 and 2), Latur (part 1 and 2), Nanded (part 1 and 2) and Buldhana (part 1 and 2) are published. Work regarding Chandrapur and Sindhudurg is in progress.
4. Maharashtra State Gazetteers (Marathi and English): it covers the Gazetteers on the subject which can be best treated for the State as a whole and not for the smaller area of a district published in Marathi and English. In this series 17 State Gazetteers are published and Yatra va Utsav (Konkan vibhaag), Bhasha va Vangmay, Fauna, Timber are yet to be published.
5. Source Material for a History of the Freedom Movement in India: to publish this material this department complies the information from the Government files, record offices, the Police department, Home Department of the Mantralaya, newspapers, etc. 13 volumes are published in this series.
6. Swatantrya Sainik Charitrakosh (WHO’S WHO OF FREEDOM FIGHTERS)
These volumes contain the life sketch of the freedom fighters who dedicated their lives to serve their motherland and their role in the freedom movement of India.
